Sherry Sparks – President of New Brunswick Building Officials Association
Sherry Sparks holds a UNB degree in civil engineering and a NBCC diploma in civil engineering technology, has received her Skilled Communicator Designation from International Training and Communication (ITC), project manager gold seal certificate, her Levels 1, 2 and 3 Certification as a Qualified Building Inspector and Level 1 Certification as a Certified Building Inspector from the New Brunswick Building Officials Association.
Sherry has over 26 years of experience at all 3 levels of government: municipal, provincial and federal. She started her professional career, as a design engineer-in-training for Marine Atlantic and in 1991 became a regional engineer with the New Brunswick Department of Supply and Services (DSS). In 2002, she was named DSS environmental impact assessment manager responsible for the proposed modification to the Petitcodiac River Causeway and the Eel River Dam. In 2005 she took on the role of project managing the design for the new Moncton and Saint John courthouses. In June 2007 she accepted the position of Director of Building Inspection with the City of Moncton.
She completed her term as President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick in 2002 and has been a member of the Association since 1986, holding various positions at Branch, Council and Executive levels.
Sherry is currently the President of the New Brunswick Building Officials Association, Regional Vice President of the Atlantic Region Council for the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and member of the YWCA Board and Chair of the YWCA Building Committee, YMCW Building Committee and a member of the Spencer Foundation Board.
She is Past President of Primus ITC Club and successfully competed in speech contests at club, region, national and international levels.
Sherry is the recipient of the Engineers Canada Fellowship Certificate, YWCA Women at Work Distinction Award, Muriel Fergusson Award, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of New Brunswick Support of Women in Engineering Award and Citizenship Award and Certificate of Appreciation from the Town of Riverview for volunteer work at St. Paul’s United Church.
She is the mother of two adult-aged children Maria Doctor of Truro, NS and David Sparks of Moncton, NB, grandmother to Manizeh Doctor and is married to a terrific husband John who is also a Professional Engineer and a graduate of NBCC civil engineering technology program.
Other current activities include YMCA Building Committee, Hillsborough Fashions’ Gala Steering Committee (fundraising event for breast cancer that has raised more than a $400,000 for the Greater Moncton area since 1998) and an active volunteer with Big Brothers/ Big Sisters for the past 5 years. She is also designated as an Ambassador for the Province of New Brunswick
Her extra-curricular activities include exercising at the exercising, ballroom dancing, cross-country skiing, golf, boating hiking and Tai Chi. In 2010 she participated in the opening Tai Chi ceremony of the IAAF Junior World Championships with other members of the Chinese Association.
